Secure Research Environment (SRE)

Security and Compliance

• FAR 52.204-21 is supported
  SRE currently supports FAR 52.204-21 Basic Safeguarding of Covered Contractor Information Systems (Basic Safeguarding).
• NIST 800-171 is NOT supported
  At this time, SRE is not able to comply with NIST 800-171 and there is no estimated timeline for achieving compliance. If your research project requires compliance with either NIST 800-171, or with any other framework, please consult with the Research Cyber Infrastructure Center (RCIC) on options.

Operating System Supported

• Microsoft Windows Server OS: At this time, SRE supports virtual servers running Microsoft Windows Server operating systems.
• Linux support may be added at a later date.
• SRE is not designed for physical server hosting.

Key Security Controls

• Access to the environment is restricted, and the environment itself is segregated into distinct areas giving each research team their own space to work in.
• All user logins require two-factor authentication.
• All transmission of data into and out of the environment is encrypted and logged.
• All records and logs are subject to campus audit.
